FLIGHT SAFETY FOUNDATION—MEDITERRANEAN
Annual Award Ceremony
Nicosia, 19 May 2016
Address by Mr. Iacovos Papadopoulos, Chairman

The Flight Safety Foundation-Mediterranean has instituted since its establishment its Annual Excellence Award. The Award is presented to persons, organizations or businesses as a recognition to their contribution to the development of aviation related matters. The Executive Board of our Foundation has decided that this year’s Award is presented to Aegean Airlines for their contribution to the development of Air Transport in South East Europe and the Mediterranean region.

The origins of Aegean Airlines go back to 1992 with the establishment of Aegean Aviation operating as a VIP/business air operation specialising in executive and air ambulance services. It was transformed to Aegean Airlines in 1992 starting scheduled operations with two new Avro jets, initially to two destinations in Greece. The years that followed saw continuous expansion with the launching of international routes in 2002, ordering of new aircraft and establishing commercial partnerships, including joining the Star Alliance Network in 2010.

Through organic growth, acquisitions, mergers and continuing investments, focusing on quality, efficiency and productivity and always guided by the foresight, business acumen, perseverance and tenacity of founders and management, Aegean Airlines serves today 111 international and 34 domestic destinations with 61 aircraft based at the their main hub in Athens but also at 6 other bases including Larnaka.

It is indeed with great pleasure that I call upon Mr. Zisis Pehlivanoudis, Chief Operating Officer of Aegean Airlines to be presented with this year’s Award, in recognition of their of contribution to the development of Air Transport in South East Europe and the Mediterranean region.
